barrel - Factory nickel finish with nickel plated small
parts and checkered walnut stocks with recessed Colt
medallions. Factory letter confirms all features including
the inscription and indicates this Colt revolver was shipped
on March 23, 1917 to Cohn's Sporting Goods, Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania for the Harrisburg police Department in a three
gun shipment. (presumably the three revolvers factory
engraved with the inscription "Sergeant")
What makes this Colt most unique is the factory
inscription "Sergeant" on the butt. As noted below in
special order entry 213/68 dated 2/27/1917, this revolver
was one of a total of 68 ordered by the Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania Police Department, all "selected & targeted". 58 of these revolvers were
engraved "H.P.D." on the butt with 10 of the 68
reserved for Chief qty 1, Captain qty 1,
Lieutenant qty 1, Sergeant qty 3 and Detective
qty 4. As noted at the bottom of the special order entry,
there were to be no further marks on these 10 inscribed
arms.
